The thyroid is the most important gland in the human body. It is located on the front part of the neck and has a butterfly shape. The gland secretes hormones that are responsible for numerous processes in the body and any kind of disruption in the production of these hormones can have catastrophic consequences on our health. Problems with the thyroid may be the reason for your sudden weight gain or weight loss, which is why you should always keep it functioning properly.
Today we’re going to show you a simple test which will reveal the state of your thyroid easily. But before starting, let’s look at the main functions of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland that produces important hormones responsible for many processes in the body. Thyroid hormones regulate the rhythm of the heart and are responsible for our metabolism as well.
There are two main thyroid disorders – hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid). Both conditions are more common in women than in men and can cause serious health problems. The thyroid absorbs iodine from food and converts it to hormones, which is why people suffering from iodine deficiency are more prone to thyroid disorders.
Hypothyroidism is a condition which occurs when the thyroid produces an insufficient amount of hormones or no hormones at all. It manifests through fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, dry and pale skin and sudden weight gain. The second thyroid disorder, hyperthyroidism, occurs when the gland produces too much hormones and causes problems such as anxiety, insomnia and weight loss. Besides these symptoms, hyperthyroidism may also cause protruding eyes.
If you want to check the state of your thyroid, we’re going to show you a simple test which you can try at home. Of course, it’s not a replacement for a medical opinion, but it’ll give you an idea of what might be going on with your thyroid. The test has been recommended by doctors such as Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, co-author of the Real Cure book.
The procedure is pretty simple and only requires a thermometer. Thy thyroid gland reflects the body’s metabolic rate and generates heat, which we can use to detect problems with the gland. The best type of thermometer is basal mercury thermometer, which can be easily found in pharmacies. If you don’t have this thermometer, go with a digital one, although it can be inaccurate. If the readings are wrong due to a low battery or damage, you won’t be able to read the state of your thyroid properly.
If you have a mercury thermometer, shake it before use and make sure that it’s not showing temperature above 35 C (95 F).
Now, put the thermometer next to your bed and go to sleep, then put it under your armpit first thing in the morning.
Leave it there for ten minutes while you’re lying in your bed in order to check your body temperature which correlates with the function of the thyroid.
After ten minutes, remove the thermometer from your armpit and check the temperature.
If your thermometer is digital, you won’t need to wait for ten minutes – once the whistle blows, write down the temperature.
If your body temperature is between 36.5 and 36.8C, your thyroid is working properly. If the temperature is above 36.8C and you’re not suffering from an infection, the thyroid is working too fast. Repeat the test for 4 days in a row and if the temperature stays above 36.8 degrees, visit your doctor.
For menstruating women, the test should be performed on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th day of the cycle, as the body temperature rises during ovulation. Postmenopausal women and men can perform the test any day they like. The test is not a substitute for medical opinion, but it can help you recognize the problem you’re facing.
