Should You Wash Fresh Fruits in Vinegar?

About 48 million people annually get sick from eating contaminated food. To avoid any unpleasant experience with food poisoning, we will give you information and advice about how to wash the food properly, cheaply and safely, especially fruit and vegetables.

We have two basic tips for you:

  1. WASH THE FRUIT AND VEGETABLES THOROUGHLY WITH WATER
  2. USE VINEGAR FOR ADDITIONAL CLEANING

Vinegar helps in removing all chemicals and bacteria found on fruit and vegetables, but also destroys types of bacteria like E. coli.

How to perform a cleaning ritual?

  • Products with a smooth peel

Insert mixture of vinegar and water in a ratio of 1 to 3 into a bottle with a nozzle (imagine the bottle in 4 cases, 1 part vinegar, remaining 3 water) to clean the product with a smooth peel.

Sprinkle the fruits or vegetables with the mixture completely and leave them for at least 30 second before you rub them with a brush or sponge (the rough side). After you rub them, rinse them with cold water. It will remove the taste of vinegar on them.

This kind of products includes apples, tomatoes, pears, grapes, marrows and others.

  • Products with a rough peel

Broccoli, cauliflower, leaf vegetables, watermelons, melons, potatoes, strawberries, raspberries and other products with smooth and soft peel are harder to clean.

It is necessary to fill a container with warm water (50-60º) and to add vinegar depending on the size of the container. This makes an acidic water that kills bacteria on food. Leave it for about 10 minutes to be soaked in the water and then rinse them with cold water, rubbing them with your hands.

Be cautious.

Always wash your hands before and after cleaning the products.

TIPS

If you add lemon juice to the mixture to increase the acidity, you can also add salt. This will increase the action and it will kill more bacteria faster.

If you wash fruit like strawberries and raspberries despite detoxification there is another benefit, it will keep them fresh for a longer period of time.
